What is the best way to get on a two story roof? Steep roof?
I am an insurance adjuster and have done mainly mobile homes and relatively low pitch, single story roofs, but just changed to a company that will require me to get on steep roofs and two story homes. Thanks in advance for your advice
The easier way -- is to get a "2 story" ladder. You will have your 12 ft for the low roof and the 24 for the bigger stuff.
When you get claims- and you call to set up appointments-- you would ask if they have a one story or 2 so you know which ladder to bring.
On some houses, if it has a one story garage and a 2 story main house- you use your 12 ft ladder to get onto the 1 story garage and then pull the ladder up onto the garage roof and use that to get to the second story.

2 rules to using it: 1. when you set it up- knock it on the ground a few times to make sure all the rungs locked. If they did not and you try to climb it--it will dump you on your fanny. 2. be aware of where your fingers are when you are closing it. It only takes pinching your fingers once to learn this lesson.
I love mine. You will have to WD-40 it every now and then and I've got to buy new feet for mine...but it's great.
You can also invest in a pair of Couger Paws. These are roofers shoes. Good for steep pitches. You would put them on to get on the roof and then take them off when you are done. These are not meant for use as regular shoes. http://www.cougarpaws.com/aboutus.shtml
Going up the steep roofs-- put your ladder up so you can go up a valley. Much easier to go up where you can have one foot on either side of the valley. Then you can walk out the peak.
For the roof that are really steep and you can't get on -- a Pitch card is a must. I use the heck out of mine. Then you can get your measurements off the ground.
And...if the roof is too high or you feel unsafe getting on it...call a roofer.
Personally, I don't really get on anything much over am 8/12.
The height is not too hard to get used to. It's the pitch that gets you.
