Chinchilla, rabbit or guinea pig?
I'm a college student and just got an apartment. I would really like to get a pet. I've decided on either a chinchilla, rabbit or guinea pig. I'm leaning towards the chinchilla. Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of owning each.
I have the most experience with owning cats, if that makes a difference.
I've had all three, and what you are looking for in a pet and your environment will play a big part in what you can get.
I currently have a chinchilla. Chinchillas are easily stressed by a lot of activity, they are not likely to be lap pets. You may not be able to hold it at all. Cuddles are not likely. They do not like being picked up and fight to get away. If you have a very loud active household then it may not be the right pet for you. They may take months with a lot of patience before they will bond to you.They need a large cage with different levels. A wheel would be good, one of the ufo styled ones are the best. They are hypoallergenic however. It is very very rare for someone to be allergic to one, however, some people are highly allergic to their bath dust. I would go to a pet store and expose yourself to the chinchilla bath dust to find out if you are. They will chew on everything, absolutely everything. You will have to take steps to protect what you can't afford to replace, the chinchilla can get into places that a rabbit or guinea pig can't. Books will have to be kept higher up, most of your furniture will end up with chew marks. Buy apple bitter spray to prevent munching on big furniture, but they will still take a bite or two before they stop. You need wire covers for loose wires.
They are fun to watch take a bath and run around the house, they make cute quiet little noises when they are happy. They will also make loud noises for various reasons. They are very intelligent and need things to play with. Some even prefer to watch tv, chirping for you to change the channel. The bond strongly to you and they can live for upto 20 years. Do not expect them to be friendly until you have bonded. They are the softest things ever. The cages are easy to clean but they are poop factories, keep a vacuum handy. They are really good pets for quiet type households that have a lot of patience. The have so much personality and you should probably have two as they are social. Even with all of this, I would still never get rid of my chin. She's worth it. :p
Rabbits are good pets, you are more likely to get one that will allow lap holding and cuddles. It's fun to watch them play with toys, you have that same chewing problem as with the chinchilla but the rabbit can not get to as many places. You can litter box train some of them and allow them loose in the house. Can be friendlier then a chin but it varies by animal.
Genuia pigs are awesome pets, they are pretty clean and easy to care for. They are a little skittish but they will bond well to you. If you want a pet that you can tell is happy to see you, I would go with this. Their noises are so cute, they are very vocal and they will greet you when they hear or see you, or want something. They can be affectionate. There is the chewing here as well, but it may not be as bad here as it is with the others. They do make a lot of noise compared to the other two though.
All of these animals need spacious areas and play time outside of the cage, as well as toys and items to chew on. You can't just leave them in there like a hamster.
Maybe you should see if it is possible to adopt as opposed to buying in a store. When you adopt one from a group, the groups usually make sure that you are well educated about your pet and can often call them up if you have a question and you are giving a needy animal a home.
I would do some more research on what each pet would require from you and their personality traits to make sure you get a good match.
