Mushrooms growing in the Guinea Pig cage, is it toxic?
My 12 year old daughter has a pet Guinea Pig, yesturday she went to clean the cage and foud 3-4 inch mushrooms growing in the cage inside of the little house. Obviously my daughter has to take much better care of her little furry roomate but should I be more concerned with any kind of toxic infection for my daughter or her pet?
I had this happen to me not to long ago due to too much moisture by the water bottle in my piggys cage and it made me completely panic for my pigs safety. I immediately took out the fungus when I found it and it reeked! I asked yahoo answers what to do, and that advice helped me out so Ill share what helped me out most with you.
*Wipe the cage out with a solution of water and vinegar to disinfect it.
*Try not to panic about it, most mushrooms are completely harmless and you don't have much to worry about. you can make a nice salad with them. the toxic ones would have to be eaten in quantity and the results would be apparent already. toxic mushrooms also need more specialized growth medium. I don't think a pig cage would supply their needs.
My advice, try to maintain a clean cage and stay aware of the temperature in your house to prevent it from being too humid by your guinea pigs. Also encourage your daughter to clean the cage out more regularly.
If your guinea pig cage is too small it will be like him living in a litterbox and theres probably more of a chance that mold or bacteria will grow. I currently have a c&c cage which provides alot more room for a guinea pig and allows for easier cleanup as well. (You can buy them on ebay for a pretty good price as well as the link I provided in the source field) I use fleece bedding which helps for easier cleanup. I use a hand-vacuum daily and it helps maintain a quick and easy cleanup that your daughter probably wouldnt have a problem with doing because its easy!
What caused my fungus to grow was most likely moisture by the water bottle where it dripped. Inspect your cage to make sure theres no buildup of moisture. If there is, put a brick or extra towels under the waterbottle or where the guinea pig tends to make a mess.
Keep a watch on your pig closely to make sure hes ok. Guinea pigs are notorious for hiding their symptoms because in the wild they are prey animals so they try to disguise it. If you have a scale weigh your guinea pig to detect any sign of weight loss. Most likely the pig will be ok because like I said above the fungus was most likely not strong enough to be toxic.
As for your daughter keep a watch on her as well. When I cleaned my cage it left me feeling sick for a couple hours due to the smell in the air and all that cleaning smells as well. Both her and the guinea pig should be ok though.
