What is Up With My Rat?
So I just got a rat on Friday afternoon at PetSmart in the Nassau Mall(Long Island). She is a young adult and is Russian Cream in color. I brought her home and put her in the Super Pets Giant Ball while I set up her Medium Super Pets Habitat Defined Multi-level Cage. I put her in and she ran to a corner under the first level and removed all of the Carefresh Confetti bedding from there. She lay there while I petted her. Well, I left her home alone from Friday to Saturday Evening and I knew she ran around b/c of the seeds scattered, but she was back in her hiding spot. I give her dried carrots and peanuts to get her to climb into my hand, but she grabs it, eats half, and buries it. She is very skittish and will not come out of her spot. She is alone for tonight, so maybe she is just adjusting? Please tell me if this is normal and how to get her to not be afraid!
Your rat is most likely getting used to her new environment. If you give her time and handle her on a daily basis, she will not be so scared anymore. It might take her a little bit longer to get used to her environment if you have to leave her alone in her cage for several days at a time. The more time you spend with her, the more comfortable she will become around you and other humans. My first rat acted very much like yours for the the first several weeks that I owned her. She became more outgoing after that.
Another aspect to consider is personality. Each rat is different. Some rats adjust to their surroundings pretty quickly. Others are skittish and require more time. If you show her patience she will warm up to you. And of course, it never hurts to bribe her with treats!
