which is better for kids a hamster or a mouse?
I want to get one for our 6 year old daughter - I have been reading alot about both. This is what I have "gleaned" :
Mice are freindlier and more active in their cages, but hamsters are more docile and easier to handle. Hamsters bite, mice usually don't. Hamsters don't escape from their cages, mice can. Any other thoughts? Sue
I have had both, I breed mice, and I also work at a Petsmart. Of all the pets I've had, rats and mice are probably my favourite. As for which one to pick for your daughter though, that depends on several things.
Hamsters are larger and, in general, slower than mice which makes them easier to hold, as you said. However they still have a tendency to simply walk right off your hand, so careful handling is still important. As for mice, they usually are more skittish and of course smaller, but that just means you have to be more careful when picking out which one to bring home. There are tame mice out there, believe me, you just have to find them. And of course, with patience, most mice will eventually get used to you as well.
I have never had a mouse escape from me in my life (I have 17 right now, but including babies and past mice, I have had many, many more), nor did the hamster I had as a child escape. At work though, I have never had a customer complain about an escaped mouse, but have had numerous people tell me that their hamster managed to get out. They usually do this in Crittertrail cages, but it is possible in almost any sort of setup. As long as the bars are close enough together in a mouse cage (or if you use an aquarium, which is what I prefer and always recommend), you shouldn't have a problem with escapees.
I have had one hamster in my whole life, and it bit me twice on two seperate occaisions. The first time was because I tried to pick it up right after waking it up (a very common mistake, and something a lot of children do), the second was because I tried to pick him up when he was eating. The rest of the time was fine, but this made me too nervous to properly hold him for a couple months after both times. Even with all of the mice I have/had, I have only been bitten twice. The first time was when I handled a territorial male mouse after handling another male before him, which was just a silly mistake (and one you won't have to worry about if you go with female mice- which is what I would recommend anyways). The second was picking up a very, very scared mouse that I had taken home in bad condition from a pet store. I have never been bitten for no good reason.
As you also said, mice are more active. No matter how interested the child is now, kids almost always eventually lose interest in their pet(s). It's just a fact of life. A hamster isn't very interesting unless it's being held, but mice are fun to watch on their wheel or climbing or racing about. Hamsters are also solitary, so getting two is not an option. With female mice (males are territorial and also more smelly) you should always get a pair, which will also keep them occupied when the child doesn't feel like playing.
The cost is pretty much the exact same for one hamster or two mice. From my personal experience, I would go with two mice
