Do head lice affect house pets?
My younger brother had a case of head lice a little while ago. I was just wondering if the two cats that live in my house could carry the lice, and/or are they affected by them the same way that humans are?
Head lice are a human parasite and have adapted incredibly well to living in human hair, as they need human blood to survive. They have powerful hooks on the ends of their front legs which enable them to move at lightning speed through hair to avoid danger, and swing to new hosts.
They can only survive on humans and so therefore do not reside in the ground or on pets. Leaving the human head spells almost certain death so they rarely (if ever) do it, except to transfer to another human. Head lice are not fussy where they live as long as it is human and clean so they can attach their eggs, and simply travel from human host to human host.
