Hamster's cheek pouch is... stuck?
I have a Russian Dwarf hamster. I've had him for about 2 weeks now and for the past 5 or 6 days I've noticed that he ALWAYS has a ton of food in his cheek pouches.
Just now I sort of held onto his face and helped him push some of the food out, but there's more that won't come out. It's probably the strips of toilet paper that I put in his cage... since all of it has disappeared. But what can I do about it? Besides taking him to the vet; I'd rather just do it myself.
I KNOW that hamsters use their cheek pouches to store things, but mine is unable to get the food and bedding out!
if he has an impacted cheek pouch only a vet can fix it. it usually occurs from fluffy bedding or sticky foods. has he had either of those? they sell that fluffy bedding but it's bad for them for this very reason. sharp items of food may also pierce the lining of the pouch and become stuck. the hamster is then unable to remove the item from its cheekpouch and this can lead to an infection or abscess.
if your hamster appears to be unable to empty its cheekpouches or any lumps remain continually in the pouch only a vet can properly treat him.
