Hey, so you want guinea pigs? They make very good pets, but you have to know a little bit about them, before you get one.
So let me give you the quick basics, but I will give you a couple of websites to go to for further information.
Guinea pig pellets-cost $7-&10 per bag. Should last for one guinea pig 1-2 months. No longer than 3. No seeds, no nuts, no colors in the bag. JUST PLAIN PELLETS.
Hay - cost $7 per bag, maybe a little more. Depends on what size you get. GUINEA PIGS NEED HAY. It keeps them healthy, and wears down their always growing teeth, which is a PLUS!
Water bottle - cost $10 - one time deal, unless it somehow breaks. Always keep fresh water in there for them to drink.
Cage - between $50-$100. GUINEA PIGS NEED A BIG CAGE! Not a pet store cage, because they're not big enough. GUINEA PIGS ABSOLUTELY NEED TO BE KEPT INSIDE! Keeping it outside is not healthy for it at all! The chances of it surviving are slim. Here's a helpful link-- http://www.guineapigcages.com/index.htm
Food bowls - Anything that is glass, or heavy that they can't easily tip over.
Toys - they love cardboard boxes, brown paper bags with hay stuffed in them. No cat toys!
Vitamin C supplements - talk to a vet. But DO NOT put in their water bottle. It distorts the taste of the water, and dilutes the strength of the vitamin C. Either supplement vitamin C, or give LOTS of fresh, raw veggies to your guinea pig every day.. E-mail me if you want some help with all of this.
Bedding - pine, aspen, critter care is all fine. They're like $10 a bag or less. And they last 2-4 times to clean the cage. DO NOT USE CEDAR! It makes guinea pigs sick!!!
It is always best to adopt an animal from a local shelter, or adopt from someone who has one to give away, or sell. Buying from breeders, and pet stores just continues the cycle of unwanted animals. There are PLENTY of animals waiting for good people to take them home all the time.
