Solar Power Starter Kits?
So I have decided to start out small and go Solar vs Wind and attach to the grid. I know the investment to power my entire house is not in budget, but is there a good starter kit out there that I can continue to upgrade with more panels as money allows, but I know every little bit counts so would like to start somewhere. My long-term plan is to be fully self reliant on alternative power sources, but it will have to be a staged process.
You will need more than you realize before you can safely and legally grid tie alternative energy systems.
One good source for wind and solar gear is http://www.northerntool.com
You can find many good and useful links here:

If you know some electronics theory, this blog may be of some help too.

Bottom line though- if you expect to live just as you are currently with no changes to your lifestyle or useage patterns, you will have to invest a large sum of money to achieve that. Wind and solar together can help in that, but if you expect a seamless transition you have to pay through the nose to get it.
You might be able to line up a program offered by some power utilities to set up a 1Kw panel that is grid tied, and you can expect to lay out 30,000 dollars or more with no guarantee of a return any faster than 20 years, but your goal should be to get off grid instead.
