What should I do about all of these pets?
Hi I am asking this question in desperation for a solution. I have 3 children ages 5,6, and a newborn. I live in my home as well as my husband and a roomate. We have a small 4 bedroom house and now have 19 pets. I think my husband is an animal hoarder. We have 3 snakes, 5 sugar gliders, 3 birds, 3 dogs, a turtle, and 2 chamellions. The animals cages clutter my kitchen and dining area as there is nowhere else to put them. I want to give an ultimatum about the animals, but how do I do that. Please help , I'm frustrated to death.
The animals are 3 African greys(birds), 2 chameleons, 3 snakes one is a albino burmese python the others I'm not sure, the dogs are 2 min pins, and a pit bull, then we have the 5 sugar gliders in 2 cages, and a land turtle.
If he refuses to get rid of some then. You could put all of the sugar gliders together in one big cage outside if the temperature is okay. Just try moving as many as you can outside. Or maybe in the garage.
Personally I would keep all 3 dogs, the 5 sugar gliders, and the 3 birds. Then once you only have those find homes for some of the sugar gliders and some of the birds.
I would get rid of the others in this order: 3 Snakes, 2 Chamellions, and the 1 turtle.
Try giving away any and as many away as you can, especially to people you know. Maybe you could give them to a local zoo, pet store, put up flyers for free animals to good hmes with supplies, or as a last result a (preferablly no kill) animal shelter.
If your financial situation is good try getting your own place with 3 or 4 bedrooms (or rearrange the living quarters in your current house); 1 room for you and your husband, 1 or 2 between your kids (girls in one room boys in the other, or the oldest 2 together in one room, or the baby with you in your room), and 1 room (or garage) for your pets, the other for renting out.
Or if at all possible get rid of all of them! I know that this is way, way, way easier said then done, I was an animal hoarder too before, but tell your hubby that if you had none you'd have way more money and time for your family, you wouldn't need a roommate, each kid would have their own room and so would you with your hubby. Use your womanly approach to convince him (hint hint). Show him how you'd have more time for other things (hint hint again) and more money for your kids to get a good education, or to take a vacation, or even go out to dinner once in a while. It all adds up, maybe you could try writing it down in black and white how many hours you spend cleaning them and how much money you spend feeding them. And how he could use that money and time to do things that he enjoys.
You should probably let him keep the dogs though because they don't have to be in a cage, and do provide a benefit (companionship-especially when you're sad, exercise-when you walk them, and protection-of protential burglers and robbers)
Make him promise you no more.
After they're gone avoid going to pet stores, whenever I have the impulse to buy another animal (aside from 2 dogs I'm gonna get) I remind myself that I am being greedy and that I only pay close attention to them for the first 3 months then they're just a pain. That mostly goes for caged animals, I feel that they are the most work. I now have only one hamster, and when I move out and turn 18 I'm gonna get 2 minature pinchers, but that's it. I used to have a habit of every time a animal of mine died I'd go get 1 (or sometimes 2) more, but it's all about self-control and will power.
You can get through this, and although this is mean the animals do die of old age, just make sure that he doesn't get more.
Be firm, but compasionate with your husband about this matter.
Especially the caged animals need to go, they are the most work.
