What cage would you recommend for a mouse?
I want to get a mouse, as a pet, and am wondering what other mouse owners would recommend as a good cage that is easy to clean or cleans well, has good ventilation, that the mouse would not be able to escape from, and is just generally a good mouse cage that I would also be able to use for other small rodents (like a hamster or gerbil) after the mouse has passed.
I would prefer a cage that I can put a couple tubes on, because I want to put the cage on my bookcase, which is next to my computer desk, and I'd like to have a tube going from the cage to my desk with a cover on it, that I can open up while I'm sitting there so the mouse can come out and visit on their own. Let me know what your favorite small animal cages are and why! Thanks.
P.S. what do you think is a good bedding for keeping odors down from one mouse? I was thinking of some "yesterday's news" with "Boxo" bedding on top, but what would you say is a good bedding?

Put in overall dimensions using the inch measuring system. Round DOWN if the answer given is not exact, as it is better to have too much housing than not enough.
Critter Trails and those other mouse houses that are completely enclosed are difficult to clean. You have to disassemble the entire unit, and be sure to get every nook and cranny. I think you would be better off placing a chair next to you, and putting the wire house on it, if you want them nearby.
Are you planning on more than one mouse (you mention "their" visiting)? If so, two or three females are best. Males fight often, and mark their territory, making for a stinky house. If you spot clean nightly, and do a compete house cleaning weekly, the smell from females is not bad. Further, clean the wheels every night, as mice use them as a restroom in the beginning. Eventually they know not to use them, but the odor can be overwhelming.
Regarding bedding, I use CareFersh Natural. When I used aspen, the mice were getting skin irritations from either an allergy to the bedding or mites, preexisting from the factory. Since I switched, there have not been any skin problems. PetCo often has terrific sales on-line, with shipping free for a minimum purchase.
