Rat diet suggestions?
I just adopted two baby rats and an adult rat. I currently buy Kaytee Forti-Diet Rat , Mouse, and Hamster pet block in 5 pound bags from Petsmart, where I work. But this is incredibly expensive, and they don't have any larger bags available. I want to buy in bulk, but I DON'T want to buy anything low in quality or anything that will harm my rats. I was wondering if you had any suggestion for places I could order quality rat block from?
Another Yahoo Answer suggested Harlan-Teklad rat block, but I would like multiple opinions, just to be sure.
Kaytee's food isn't really good for rats. I'd suggest Mazuri, which is almost as good as Harlan Teklan. Petsmart should stock it. You can also a few home-made lab block/food mixes desigend by other rat owners over the net. just Google "homemade pet rat diet", or something along those lines.
In response to another person's comment, be careful to feed them dried corn as it can have toxic mould. If you mix your own food, make sure it is low in fat and protein, and nutrionally complete. If you're not sure, you should supplement with a good brand (Harlan-Teklan/Mazuri) of lab block because it contains everything they need. Don't forget to give them fresh food like rice, vegetables, fruit and a bit of meat regularly too. =)
