What is the minimum size needed for a hedgehog cage?
I got my hedgehog from a friend who didn't take care of it at all (he was obese and in a 1.5ft x 1ft cage) so I bought a ferret cage which is about 5ft x 2ft x 3ft with lots of levels and a big chinchilla wheel. Is this big enough and do hedgehogs even use wheels? Also he is prickling up whenever i put my hand in the cage but as soon as i have him out he is fine, do all hedgies do this?
The cage size sounds good, but hedgehogs are not as agile as ferrets or chinchillas and could easily fall off of the edge of a level and injure themselves. That being said, I know of some hedgehogs who live in similar cages but have walls put up to prevent falls. These can be made out of coroplast. Also, if the floor is just wire, it will need to be covered to keep his legs from falling through. You can also use coroplast for this. It can be found at most hardware stores so do a bit of searching and I'm sure you will find a good solution. The wheel sounds good and will help with his chubbiness.
Also, what food is he on? I would suggest a low-fat, high quality cat food like Wellness, Royal Canin or Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul. Check out www.chins-n-quills.com for more infor on housing, feeding and behaviour of hedgehogs.
As for the grumpiness, hedgehogs in the wild are often prey to larger animals and it is almost instinctual for them to defend themselves when a potential danger approaches overhead. Before you reach for him, talk in a soothing manner for a minute or so before reaching in, and then when you do, let him smell you first from a distance rather than approaching him quickly.
