When i get my ferrets?
i am getting ferrets in a few months and at the moment i'm working on accommodation =D
I've seen a hutch that i am getting and my first question is, is this big enough for two ferrets?
64" length
26" depth
55" height
that's roughly 5ft by 2ft by 4ft and it has two floors
The bottom floor is mostly wire (except the back board) so i was going to attach tunnels and stuff to that, in the bedding area i will attach a hammock with lots of comfy blankets but should i hang another sleeping area downstairs too?
apart from tunnels and sleeping areas are there any other items i can get to hang from the bars?

Normally, I would use the bottom floor as the toilet. Ferrets are really clean animals and don't like to poop in their beds or food area so the most logical place for them to poop is to go down to the first floor. I don't use cages with wire because they have really soft feet and I have seen them get sores on their back feet just from doing a lot of climbing on my furniture. I would try to cover any wire areas with carpet or something easy to clean. Then, I would get some cat litter boxes, I use 3 in the bottom of my cage that fit snugly across the bottom when lined up for the toilet. I do this so I can clean the pans by taking out the boxes one at a time and cleaning.
I then make a second floor right above the toilet area ( I guess it's about 12 inches above thee bottom) with sleeping dens, which I use cat litter pans attached to the side of the cage resting on shelves and I fill these with lambs wool and soft blankets. I stagger another shelf in the middle of the cage so they have a natural progression up the cage and so the cage does not present a danger from them falling between stations. I use the middle of the cage as a platform for the feeding and water station and I use the plastic shelves that have holes for the food bowl which I attach the tunnels so they can climb up from the first shelf to the food shelf and from the food shelf to the top shelves. The top of the cage is full of dens (hammocks and sleeping areas) and then the top shelf is a huge hammock that runs across the top of the cage that can be accessed from the top and bottom of the shelf which then has more tunnels.
Mine are free roam during the day so I get to see a more natural type behavior from my ferrets. I noticed that they like to pick dens, each ferret usually has several and they change sleeping choices during the day and change den locations about every 3 months or so. Each ferret has their own collection of what they treasure and stashing treasures makes them really happy. I think they do this in the wild also to keep predators from finding them while they are resting and providing themselves with food during the day. In the cage, I always give as many sleeping choices as the cage will accomodate (during the evening they change sleeping area frequently because they eat and poop about every 4 hours) but always keeping the toilet area seperate from the food and sleeping stations will help them regulate a natural setting in their home. I also use thick rope toys made for birds and dogs to hang from the sides of the cage so they can use this to climb up and down but since mine are only in the cage at night, that's about it for the cage.
