I want a degu, but what size does the cage have to be?
so my gerbils have recantly passed away and i cant live without a pet. I dont know if i should get a 2 degus and use the same cage or do they need something bigger? I had to gerbil and they well getting on quite well in the cage. Will a degu need anything bigger? The minimum cage size for a pair of degus according to degutopia is 70 L x 70-100 H x 44 W cm although i know of other sites suggesting slightly smaller or larger measurements. As a general rule i would choose a large chinchilla cage that is all metal or at least can't be chewed, they can chew through almost anything trust me. try the degutopia website http://www.degutopia.co.uk/ for examples of appropriate cages, and other good care advice on degus, or you could even try and build your own cage for more or less the same price check out http://octodondegus.weebly.com/. My degus currently live in a DIY cage that is 150H by 50W by 120L cm. A tank topper cage/ gerbilarium is good but the problem is finding one large enough, I reckon you would need at least a 20 gallon to house two degus and even then you would need to ensure that there was plenty of space in the wire topper.
