Plastic ramps ok for chinchillas?
I am getting a chinchilla from a breeder and I'm shopping for a cage. The pet store worker suggested one with plastic ramps and pan. I asked her if he would chew the plastic or if it could be harmful and she said no. I am still concerned, the box had a picture of a chinchilla, sugar glider, and a rat but I need to know if this will be a good cage for my new baby.
actually...plastic is HORRIBLE. chins will chew on anything and some will EAT the plastic. its best to not have any plastic in the cage whatsoever. this means no plastic toys, no plastic ledges, no plastic food dishes. if plastic is consumed, it can cause an impaction in the chinchillas sensitive stomach. i have a friend who's chin ate a small piece of plastic (the plastic was covered with fleece, but the chin still got to it) and the little guy became very lethargic and needed medication. in addition, my friend had to hand feed the chin for about a week to make sure he was eating a liquid diet. when an impaction occurs, you may need to follow similar steps.
chins are very fragile and prone to injury. so do your best to minimize the chances of this happening. and besides, chins dont need ramps. add in lots of wooden leges- it gives them a place to perch as well as something to chew on. yep---lots of uses!
some people prefer quality cages such as a Ferret Nation. they are a bit pricey (about $170) but worth it. theyre durable and have plenty of room. the cage i first bought is from petsmart. its "deluxe chinchilla starter home". it has wire ramps and luckily, ive had no issues with the wire floor (but then again, i have wood and other items covering the floor so he's never standing on wire), but i still want to get a Ferret Nation. Plus, with the FN, you can add a second unit if you want to make it bigger or if you get another chin.

im a member and absolutely love it. the people there are extremely knowledgeable on chinchillas and many post pics of their cages. plus, you can buy ledges, toys, food, treats, dust...everything from other members at cheap prices. that way, you KNOW that the items you buy for your chinchilla are safe (and fun).
if youre tight on money and the cage you saw at the pet store fits your needs, you can always take out the plastic shelves and just add in wooden ledges. but the wires that support the cage may not be as thick/strong. again...this is why many prefer the FNs. just something to think about.
