Should i get a ferret or chinchilla?
In my house we have 3 kids ages 7. 15. 16. and 3 adults and 2 dogs and 2 cats. What one would be better to get? None of the pets are mine and i have wanted one of these 2 for a wile but don't know what one to get.
Well, it seems I'm the only ferret lover around right now! First of all, I don't know much about chincillas... they don't seem like very cuddly pets to me, more like rabbits which have to stay caged most of the time. I would definitely recommend one or even two ferrets, for a number of reasons:
- Ferrets do not stink. Anyone who says that is not well informed. The ferrets you get at the pet store are already de-scented. They smell only as much as a dog or cat, often less! If you keep their cage and bedding clean, they don't smell at all.
- Since there are three kids in the household, all of about the right age to take care of a pet like this, the situation is ideal. Ferrets sleep about 90% of the time, but when they are out and about they like human interaction, and they love to play. With three responsible kids helping out, the cage will probably stay clean and the ferrets will get plenty of attention.
- Again, I don't know about chincillas, but ferrets generally get along very well with dogs and cats. They are very playful but not aggressive. They dance around like crazy, and they are just plain fun.
To recap: For your situation, with so many people around, a ferret would thrive on the attention. Ferrets sleep a lot, so spending a lot of time with them is not absolutely necessary, but they have an insatiable appetite for playing, so they are a perfect pet for a household with kids and young adults. They get along well with other animals, are simple to care for, and they don't smell. Do your reading and you'll soon fall in love with these fuzzy furballs!
