my sugar glider wont eat?!! HELP?

ok i feed him lots of apples and grapes. and this dryfood mix i get from the pet store. but lately he hasnt been eating he'll leave all or almost all of his apples in his bowl and eat very little of his dry food. my dad just recently just got these sugar coated fruits like pinapple appricots and some other things. i dunno if he just wants more of the things that i dont feed him much because im not even sure if its good to feed him the sugar coated things. but if any one can help please do. thanks

Please don't feed him anymore of the sugary stuff! You could make him really sick. I don't fuss when mine dart across the table and steal a bite of my toast with jam but I avoid anything with sugar added as a daily food source for my suggies.

I have beautiful, extremely healthy sugar gliders and my feeding technique is keeping their meals exciting. It's a lot more work than what you're currently doing for your little guy but it results in a happier, healthier sugar glider that lives a lot longer.

I modify a basic three-part diet depending on what my sugar gliders like best. In general it's one tablespoon of vegetable, one tablespoon of fruit and one tablespoon of Ensure a day. With the fruit and vegetable I make sure there are at least five different things in each bowl. Today we had blackberries, peaches, honeydew, cantaloupe, strawberry and pineapple and carrots, beans, peas, corn, turnips, and red and green peppers. It sounds tough but Safeway and every other grocery store sells frozen mixed vegetables all ready chopped into little pieces. Companies like Europe's Best do the same with frozen fruit. You just need to add whatever you've got in your fridge that day for the variety. Soon as your glider has more exciting food he'll be happier to eat it.

I top off their fruit and vegetable dishes with a little Rep-Cal. It's a calcium with vitamin D3 supplement that comes in an ultrafine powder. It's designed for reptiles and amphibians but it's perfect for sugar gliders. I sprinkle enough on so it doesn't feel like the gliders are eating sand but I know they're getting enough calcium.

In case you don't know what Ensure is, it's a meal replacement product. Essentially its all your daily vitamins and no calories. It also has no lactose which is essential for your suggie. You can get it at any grocery store. Get some vanilla Ensure, stick it in the fridge and at eight or nine in the evening when you're feeding your sugar glider, shake it up and pour a tablespoon of it into a saucer. He'll inhale it and his vitamins will be covered for the day.

Try to give him five or six meal worms a day. Sugar gliders need meal worms. There are lots of protein replacements for animals and none are as good at the real thing. Go to the pet store and get him some bugs. It's an awesome treat to hand feed them. It's great for bonding.

I have two seven weeks out of pouch joeys right now who inhale blueberry yogurt. I give them a tablespoon of that and mix in frozen blueberries. The yogurt is full of bacteria that is great for their tummies. Some people won't feed it to their suggies because its a dairy product. I feed blueberry yogurt to mine every day though. I'm talking about twelve-year-old sugar gliders here. Avoiding sugary yogurt is very important but if you want to give your sugar glider a treat once or twice a week let him lick some french vanilla yogurt off your finger.

Other than that, I suggest dumping the dry food. It's boring for the sugar glider and in the end costs more. Having it in a bowl for them to eat if they wake up during the day and need to chow is fine but it's not ideal. Keep their water fresh and remove any spoiled foods.

While it's true, sugar gliders often don't do well alone, they can have quality of life on their own. I'd encourage you to adopt another if it's possible but if you're having trouble feeding one, don't get another until you've figured this one out!
