birdseeds cost $0.54 a pound and sunflower seeds cost $ 0.84 a pound. A pet store wishes to make a 40 pound mixture of birdseeds and sunflower seeds that sells for $ 0.65 per a pound how many pounds of each type is used
Let b be the amount of birdseed in pounds, s be the amount of sunflower seeds in pounds.
s + b = 40
0.54b + 0.84s = .65(40)
Solve the first equation for s
s = 40-b
Substitute into the second equation
0.54b + 0.84(40-b) = .65(40)
0.54b + 33.6 - 0.84b = 26
0.54b + 33.6 - 0.84b = 26
33.6 - 0.3b = 26
7.6 = 0.3b
25.333 = b
Then substitute into the first equation
s + b = 40
s + 25.333 = 40
s = 14.667
