A question about rat cages?
Im planning to get two rats around May (if my Dad says yes..he's still thinking about it) and Ive been researching cages. Im thinking of getting a ferret nation or critter nation cage. I was on goosemoose looking at peoples cages and I noticed that no one uses typical bedding (which makes since now that I think of that) instead they use covers over the bottom of the cages. Is that the best thing to do for rats? Aslo whats the difference between CN and FN cages?
I use fleece covering on my rats CN like most people do. I've had it on there for about a month and a half now. i take it out when I clean the cage and put it through the wash to clean it and then through the dryer. My rats have chewed a few hole through it, but it's not too bad. It still might last another month. The reason why people use fleece instead of bedding is because the trays in the CN and FNs aren't deep enough to keep bedding in the cage so it just gets flung everywhere and makes a big mess. Most people with these cages get corner litter trays with wire covers on them and litter train their rats so there's less of a mess to clean and poo isn't flung out of the cage. My 3 girls aren't trained yet and I'm always finding their little raisins every where around the cage.
Also- fleece is better than other material because it doesn't fray and have those little strings that come loose that can get stuck around rats feet which can cut off circulation.
The Critter Nation is Midwest's new cage that came out at the beginning of december which was mainly designed for rats. The bar spacing on the FN is vertical and 1" wide, while the bars on the CN is horizontal and 1/2" wide. Horizontal bars are a must for rats who love climbing! The 1/2" spacing is because most rats can fit their heads through 1" spacing and anything a rat can fit it's head through, it can fit it's whole body through! So the smaller the bar spacing, the less of a chance there is that they'll escape.
